The Diocese of Darjeeling was erected on 8 August 1962 by a decree Quam at Modern given by Pope John XXIII (now declared Saint). It was formed by separating the Darjeeling District from the Church of Calcutta and joining the Apostolic Prefecture of Sikkim-Kalimpong. In November 1997, the diocese was bifurcated by carving out the Siliguri sub-division from its jurisdiction to create the new Diocese of Bagdogra. The present Darjeeling Diocese consists of the Districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the State of Sikkim, and the Kingdom of Bhutan.
